Week 8: What the rules are about

The rules explained in this newsletter generally fall into one or two topic categories:

  • Finding consensus — When Wikipedia's rules fall short, "consensus" takes over. Of course, rules guide that, too.

  • Editor behavior — Remember how Wikipedia editors should treat each other with "respect and civility"? Well, there are many ways they often do not, hence many rules aiming to fix that..

  • Acceptable content — What should be included in Wikipedia, and how should it be written about? This is another very large category.

  • Proper style — Consistency of format mattes, hence a very large Manual of Style.

For each rule ahead, we'll let you know not just type of rule it is, but what it's meant to address.
