Energy of Tomorrow Website

Amid the deluge of opinions about how we should power our country in the decades to come, it has become increasingly difficult to separate fact from fiction. We worked as a data partner alongside the American Petroleum Institute and Oklahoma City-based agency Saxum to create Our Energy Tomorrow, an interactive visualization that explores the potential future of the U.S. energy system through 2040.

This tool was custom-built to enable journalists, legislators, and decision makers to easily and productively sort through data compiled by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) in its Annual Energy Outlooks (AEO) for 2014 and 2015, which encompasses 38 possible scenarios. After extensive research, we chose specific data points to represent a broad spectrum of relevant metrics. These include production, consumption, imports and exports for a range of fuel types. It also includes economic metrics such as GDP, manufacturing jobs, etc, and consumer metrics, such as electricity and motor gas prices.
